The Raucoustra is Wellington Music Centre's 'raucous orchestra' – a joyful, exploratory, and sometimes raucous musical adventure. It's a bit different than a traditional orchestra!

What is the Raucoustra?
The Wellington Music Centre Raucoustra is a fun, social and completely free music group that is open to all kids ages 8-12 that play an instrument.
Led by the brilliant teaching pair of violinist Miru Shimaoka and percussionist Esteban Ureña, the Raucoustra is a place where kids can learn about how group music is put together, use their playing skills to express themselves.
All instruments are welcome, including keyboards, guitars and percussion.
Raucous · (adjective)
1. Making or constituting a disturbingly harsh and loud noise: raucous youths.
2. Disturbing the public peace; loud and disorderly.
Orchestra · (noun)
1. A group of instrumentalists, especially one combining string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections.
2. The semicircular space in front of an ancient Greek theatre stage where the chorus danced and sang.
What will students do in the Raucoustra?
The Raucoustra focuses on improvisation as a pathway to growing confidence and creativity in music. Through musical games, exercises, and songs, participants will develop key musicianship skills:

attentive listening to other players

confidence in creating and sharing ideas

playing in time and in tune

learning melodies 'by ear' (i.e. without written music notes)

knowledge of many instruments

introductions to scales, chords, and musical structures
Who can enrol for the Raucoustra
All level 2/3 students at the Wellington Music Centre are invited to join the Raucoustra. There's no audition, but 1-2 years of playing experience is advised for participants.
